The Benefits of Criticism from Katy West,

                 The Benefits of Criticism:
from  Katy West, Group of 1
                     January 11, 2012
                                          reshared with permission thanks Katy

Personal Growth
1.Looking for seeds of truth in criticism encourages humility. It’s not easy to take an honest look at yourself and your weaknesses, but you can only grow if you’re willing to try.
2.Learning from criticism allows you to improve.  Almost every critique gives you a tool to more effectively create the tomorrow you visualize.
3.Criticism opens you up to new perspectives and new ideas you may not have considered. Whenever someone challenges you, they help expand your thinking.
4.Your critics give you an opportunity to practice active listening. This means you resist the urge to analyze in your head, planning your rebuttal, and simply consider what the other person is saying.
5.You have the chance to practice forgiveness when you come up against harsh critics. Most of us carry around stress and frustration that we unintentionally misdirect from time to time.

Emotional Benefits
6.It’s helpful to learn how to sit with the discomfort of an initial emotional reaction instead of immediately acting or retaliating. All too often we want to do something with our feelings—generally not a great idea!
7.Criticism gives you the chance to foster problem solving skills, which isn’t always easy when you’re feeling sensitive, self-critical, or annoyed with your critic.
8.Receiving criticism that hits a sensitive spot helps you explore unresolved issues. Maybe you’re sensitive about your intelligence because you’re holding onto something someone said to you years ago—something you need to release.
9.Interpreting someone else's feedback is an opportunity for rational thinking—sometimes, despite a negative tone, criticism is incredibly useful.
10.Criticism encourages you to question your instinctive associations and feelings; praise is good, criticism is bad. If we recondition ourselves to see things in less black and white terms, there’s no stop to how far we can go!

Improved Relationships
11.Criticism presents an opportunity to choose peace over conflict. Often times, when criticized our instinct is to fight, creating unnecessary drama. The people around us generally want to help us, not judge us.
12.Fielding criticism well helps you mitigate the need to be right. Nothing closes an open mind like ego—bad for your personal growth, and damaging for relationships.
13.Your critics give you an opportunity to challenge any people-pleasing tendencies. Relationships based on a constant need for approval can be draining for everyone involved. It’s liberating to let people think whatever they want—they’re going to do it anyway.
14.Criticism gives you the chance to teach people how to treat you. If someone delivers it poorly, you can take this opportunity to tell them, “I think you make some valid points, but I would receive them better if you didn’t raise your voice.”
15.Certain pieces of criticism teach you not to sweat the small stuff. In the grand scheme of things, it doesn’t matter that your boyfriend thinks you load the dishwasher “wrong.”

Time Efficiency
16.The more time you spend dwelling about what someone said, the less time you have to do something with it.
17.If you improve how you operate after receiving criticism, this will save time and energy in the future. When you think about from that perspective—criticism as a time saver—it’s hard not to appreciate it!
18. Fostering the ability to let go of your feelings and thoughts about being critiqued can help you let go in other areas of your life. Letting go of worries, regrets, stresses, fears, and even positive feelings helps you root yourself in the present moment. Mindfulness is always the most efficient use of time.
19.Criticism reinforces the power of personal space. Taking 10 minutes to process your emotions, perhaps by writing in a journal, will ensure you respond well. And responding the well the first time prevents one critical comment from dominating your day.
20. In some cases, criticism teaches you how to interact with a person, if they’re negative or hostile, for example. Knowing this can save you a lot of time and stress in the future.

Self Confidence
21.Learning to receive false criticism—feedback that has no constructive value—without losing your confidence is a must if you want to do big things in life. The more attention your work receives, the more criticism you’ll have to field.
22. When someone criticizes you, it shines a light on your own insecurities. If you secretly agree that you’re lazy, you should get to the root of that. Why do you believe that—and what can you do about it?
23.Learning to move forward after criticism, even if you don’t feel incredibly confident, ensures no isolated comment prevents you from seizing your dreams. Think of it as separating the wheat from the chaff; takes what’s useful, leave the rest, and keep going!
24. When someone else appraises you harshly, you have an opportunity to monitor your internal self-talk'  Research indicates up to 80% of our thoughts are negative. Take this opportunity to monitor and change your thought processes so you don’t drain and sabotage yourself!

“May the entire Universe be filled with Peace and Joy, Love and Light. May the light of Truth overcome all darkness! Victory to that Light! Jai!” Bright Blessings to you all, Chessie

LETTING GO,LEARNING THE MONKEYS LESSON

                             LETTING GO
                    THE MONKEY'S LESSON
© Chessie Roberts 2012, all rights reserved

There is an old story about a monkey who wants to get the tasty kernel out of a coconut that he has found. Someone had already made a hole to drink the milk of the cocoa nut but, because of the work it takes to open the nut itself, just left it in the ground. The monkey stuck his paw into the hole, grabbed the kernel and then attempted to withdraw his fist while clenching the treat. Much to his dismay and frustration, he was unable withdraw his hand. The only way he can be free of the burden of the nut would be to open his clenched fist but that would mean letting go of the food.

We people do this all the time. We hold on to hurts and angers, fears and suppositions, hates and prejudices as though they were our food of life. We then turn and ask why our lives are so filled with hurt, anger, fear, hate and other things of our own creation. We are made anxious and confrontational when told to “let go”. We demand to be told how to do this letting go thing, we say that we can't possibly do that for the event needs to be remembered, wallowed in, carried in our memory until it creates an illness within our biology, brought up again and again to offer an excuse for our own bad behavior and over reactions.

I tell you this now, NOTHING is important enough to make yourself ill over. Not rape, murder, theft, or anything else that you can think up is worth being miserable for the rest of your life. Things happen or they don't. They occur to teach a point to whoever is involved in the class. Both the doer and the recipient learn from it...if they choose to. If the student chooses not to learn the first time, the lesson will be repeated. Now, how long do you wish to wallow in your trauma? Why not accept the lesson of the event so as to not have it repeated and move on and grow? That is the healthy, sensible action. Grinding on it until you create personal issues for yourself is not.

Look at your event/situation as the coconut. Look for solutions rather than problems. How can you get the treat out of the nut by letting go? There is a hole, right? You can turn the nut upside down until the treat falls out, right? Then let go and use an alternate method. If that one doesn't work for you, look for another. There is always a way to let go and grow, Bright Blessings Chessie

ON DEATH AND DYING

ON DEATH AND DYING

It seems that a lot of us are experiencing the loss of family, friends and loved ones lately so it feels appropriate to discuss it here today.

I ask you to look at the Universal truth that “All is One”. What this means is that EVERYTHING is made from the creative energy of Source, God, Unity Consciousness; whatever your paradigm chooses to call it. We, they, it are made from the same 'stuff'. We feel it, we eat it, we breath it, we move through it, we absorb it all our lives. We are biology animated by a SOUL, a part of the Divine, a piece of God Energy so that when we pass form this incarnation, we leave the biology behind (we no longer need it) and the living part of us goes back into the Divine Stuff from which all things are created and we become Divine Stuff again. In this way we become more a part of life and its cycles.

While in the process of passing on to our next plane of existence the Soul is learning what it needs to know, learning the last lessons of this life and coming to peace with whatever that person needs to become at peace with. At this point in the journey prayers for the healing of the biology are not always in the best interest of the soul. Prayers for the “best interest of the soul” are more to the point and less manipulative (more about what we want than about what our loved one requires) and disrupting to the person who is on this journey. We are told that there are two journeys that must be taken alone (from the perspective of the living) birth and death. The truth of the matter is that we are well escorted in both directions by our guidance and the love of the Divine. So by allowing a gentle fearless passing we are giving one of our greatest gifts and by accepting that God knows what It is doing we receive one of our greatest gifts.

One of tenants of the Evolution of Self ; Journey into Body, Mind, Spirit Balance program as well as other philosophies tell us "As we are essentially all one, we really never leave. As we pass from our old incarnation toward our new one we are more a part of our loved ones than ever before. As those who loved us remember us, we are forever in their hearts. Then, when it is our turn to walk the same path, we have it paved by those who went before as we pave it for those who come after us. Grief on this plane is in our biology and must be felt and dealt with. Knowing in your heart that no one is ever truly ever lost to us can help our biological self get through the grief better.”{Chessie Roberts}
A wise woman once said to me, “ As your journey through life changes just remember the only thing constant in life is change. Learn from those changes and embrace the life you have been given. Celebrate everyday you have with a smile on your face and a smile in your heart. A Universal Prayer (from the Yoga tradition) to remember throughout the day, "May the Universe be filled with joy, love and light.” Remember the universe starts with you and the finding your own peace, joy, love and light! Namaste”
"The Wise Souls of Tich Nat Han, Ekhardt Tolle, and the Dhali Lama, said; “You can be no closer to God than when you are helping someone transition from this life to the next, it is true grace. Be present to the miracle my friend.
Bright Blessings, Gentle Passings and Strength to let go and remember in love. Chessie

ONE OF OUR MOST ENDURING LESSONS WE LEARN IN KINDERGARTEN

ONE OF OUR MOST ENDURING LESSONS WE LEARN IN KINDERGARTEN

“Come on Honey, it's time to go to Big Boy/Girl school.”

“I don't want to go! I want to stay home with you!”

“Come on sweetheart you will have a good time and meet all kinds of new friends and play new games! You'll love it!!”

Sullenly, “OK.”

AT THE SCHOOL:

“Here we are, hop put and let’s meet your teacher.”

The water works start and then the screaming, “NNNNNOOOO! MMMOOOMMMYYY! You are terrified of the unknown and don't want your comfort, your known quantity to leave.

The teacher gently but firmly takes you back into the school while Mom quickly walks away with a big smile and promises to come back after school is over.

As you become interested and then engrossed in the day’s lessons and play, Mommy fades to the back of your mind and you begin having a wonderful time. Soon the bell rings and Teacher says, “It's time to go home.” and Mommy appears at the door.

The waterworks start in reverse, this time not from fear but frustration. The fear you felt earlier has been replaced by fun and new things, you will learn quickly the coming and going of school and you move on.

This is a conversation I had with a friend of mine several mornings ago.

Friend: “Why do we hang onto the very things we know we must let go of?”

Me; “Comfort zone stuff. We get comfortable with the situation and change is scary. Knowing something and acting on that knowledge are entirely two different things,

F: “So I guess we will ultimately change when the push to change becomes less uncomfortable than the draw of staying the same?

M; “Bingo! When we can “act in” and “do courage”, then we grow. Courage is feeling the fear and doing it anyway.”

F; “Excellent point! It is a choice after all.”

M: “It is and always has been a choice.”

F; “It's the kindergarten thing again then Hun?”

M; “Yes, who knew THAT would follow us so far?”

F; “It is interesting how we speak(think) our lives into existence! ...When we see that...oh boy! Life is getting fun!”

And there it is, The Kindergarten Thing. It isn't just an event in our lives, It is something that we go through over and over again as we live our lives. Elementary school, entering high school, dating, doctors/dentist appointments, speeches, marriage/divorce, new jobs, childbirth, a death in the family and, maybe the most frightening of all spiritual growth. We face changes all of our lives. Most of the time we breeze right through them but there are the ones that take us right back to kindergarten.

The more personal these things are the more we resist them and hang onto the very thing(s) we KNOW we need to let go of. The fear of the unknown will sometimes stop us cold. Now here is the problem with that; most will stay where they are not happy and complain, worry and internalize their fear and frustration, putting themselves in the roll of “victim”. All the while blaming the boss or the situation when all they have to do is decide to make a change for the better. While they are feeling stuck and spinning themselves up into a frenzy over their “bad luck” and being the victim, they are making themselves sick. Then, when their bodies succumb to the eternal stuff that they are CHOOSING to put themselves through they can cry victim once again because they are now very sick. Here is where you face the choice to stay feeling sorry for yourself or deciding you don't want to play anymore.

When you face your fear of change and step out in courage and trust that you can help yourself, your life begins to change in wonderful and unexpected ways. The next time you have to go back to kindergarten remember this and you will do well. Bright Blessings and Happy First Day of School!

How to Make the Whole World Come Together

                 The Whole World Came Together

A young mother was ready for a few minutes of relaxation after a long and demanding day. However, her young daughter had other plans for her mother's time.

'Read me a story, Mom,' the little girl requested.

'Give Mommy a few minutes to relax and unwind. Then I'll be happy to read you a story,' pleaded the mother.

The little girl was insistent that Mommy read to her now. With a stroke of genius, the mother tore off the back page of the magazine she was reading. It contained a full-page picture of the world.

As she tore it into several pieces, Mom asked her daughter to put the picture together and then she would read her a story. Surely this would buy her some relaxing moments.

A short time later, the little girl announced the completion of her puzzle project. To her mother's astonishment, the world picture was completely
assembled.

When she asked her daughter how she managed to do it so quickly, the little girl explained that on the reverse side of the page was the picture of a little girl.

'You see, Mommy!' she said, 'When I got the little girl together, the whole world came together!'(Author Unknown)

I challenge you to put yourself together; to find your balance and wholeness. As you do this you make an example of yourself to those around you and soon the ripple effect will circle the planet. Not possible you say? Why not I ask, how do you think change occurs in the first place, after all you are the change you want to see in the world, right? Remember that the only limits you have are the ones YOU place upon yourself. Growth and Bright Blessings to you all! C. S. Roberts

THE RETURN TO YOURSELF

THE RETURN TO YOURSELF

One day the air was playing tag with itself and a little puff found himself separated from the main grouping. He had whooshed into something blue and round. He had been unhappy with his life and had wished for something to change so that he could be happy again, until now, nothing had.

“Look at me!” he said to himself, “I’m beautiful! Everyone should see me now!” the little blue puff of air floated away to show off his newfound beauty. As he looked down at the grass waving in the breeze the little puff of air felt superior and yelled, “Hey you grass! Look at me! I am beautiful and you all look the same, I am special! Look at me!!!” the grass just chuckled and paid no attention. This made the puff of air in his balloon feel let down and a little angry.

The little puff in its balloon covering was not to be ignored and continued on his way until he came to the forest. “Hey you forest! Look at me! I am beautiful and you all look the same, I am special! Look at me!!!” again, the forest just chuckled and paid no attention to the little balloon. With each rejection, the little puff in his balloon got angrier and more determined to be thought of as special.

So, the little balloon floated out over the ocean, “Hey you water! Look at me! I am beautiful and you all look the same, I am special! Look at me!!!” as before the ocean paid no attention and went on its way.

The balloon was becoming very angry now because no one would admire his newfound beauty and exclaim about how special he was. “I am beautiful and I am special,” he grumbled to himself, “Why do others ignore me?” “It isn’t fair and they are making me unhappy because they don’t think I’m special!”

He floated and grumbled and grumbled and floated for a long time all the while becoming angrier with others and increasingly unhappy because of what he thought they were thinking about him. Suddenly he heard laughter and decided to go see who was having fun while he was so miserable. To his astonishment he saw up ahead an entire group of balloons laughing and playing together. There were all different shapes and colors and they were…happy. Delighted to have found others like himself, he rushed into their midst and shouted, “Hey you balloons! Look at me! I am beautiful and you all need to admire me because I am special! Look at me!!!”

“What’s so special about you?” one of the group wanted to know. “All the red, round balloons are better than you!” “No! The green ones are best!”  “They are not!” shouted a yellow one, “we are the best! “The little blue balloon was stunned, how could these other balloons think they were more special than him in his new blue form? Other balloons were gathering around, each one declaring themselves the most special and the best of all of the balloons! “How rude! How arrogant of them!” thought the blue balloon and his anger begin to spill out and infect the others. They were soon an angry mob.

He moved away from the arguing crowd and toward the other blue balloons that were beginning to group together, “Where did the laughter and fun go? Why are they arguing? We should be the only ones who are angry, we are the only ones who can be considered the best!” he asked the others. “Well,” answered the other balloons, “ it is obvious that they are jealous of us because we are the better balloon.”

Before he knew what was happening, a fight broke out! There was pushing, shoving, shouting and hitting. What had been just an argument was now a war and balloons were being injured, and the ugliness was getting unmanageable. The fight got worse and worse and the little blue balloon was afraid and tried to get away from the horrible mess. As the blue balloon was running away, two somethings happened; first he realized that he had started the battle and the second thing was, he burst!

His beautiful blue was just a shriveled, empty and useless thing, fluttering down to the ground and he found the he was free! He had rejoined with and become once more what he truly was, air! He was once again his true self; happy, carefree and at peace. The rest of the air rejoiced to have him back and welcomed him with love and happiness. “Why aren’t you angry with me for being so vain and arrogant?” the little puff of air asked.

The air considered his question for a moment and answered,” When one of us goes out on their own to discover their path and learn about life as something that they are not, we let them go. As they grow and learn what is on their path, it always brings them back to their source and we are always glad to have them home and welcome them with love. Now what lessons did you learn while you were apart from us?”

The little puff of air thought for a minute and said, “We need to see the air in everyone and love that part of them because we are all part of each other, be true to yourself, don’t waste your time trying to be what you are not, see our likenesses and not try to create differences to fight about.  Is that right?”

The air answered, “Each person learns different lessons but the ones that you have listed are some of the biggest and most universal. Welcome home and be at peace.” The little puff of air, now wiser and at peace with himself gladly embraced his place in the universe.

As people we need to recognize the Universal Energy of Creation that is the animating force in each of us. Look for how we are alike and embrace that and stop fighting over what we perceive as differences. Learn the difference between the “power to” and the “power over” and allow others to be what they are. Bright Blessings, Chessie

DUALITY

                                        DUALITY

“Truly speaking, a human being is divine. It is only our wrong understanding which keeps us small.” (Swami Muktananda)

During my daily meditation a few days ago I was struck by the notion that we are a duality. Most of you know that we are a spiritual entity, leading a human existence rather than the other way around but this insight was just beyond that.

One part of us is our biology. That is made up of the stuff of the earth. The neutrons and protons; the carbon base that sustains life on our blue marble makes up what we see when we look in the mirror; the way our bodies work to first create new life and then keep it going; the genetic information that is held in sperm and ovum that joins to make you what you are and carry the information of your lineage is nothing short of miraculous. But…

If this biology is to actually live, we need spirit. Most of us realize on some level that we are spirit, but what does this really mean? The short answer is that we are one with Universal Consciousness, Creative Energy, Soul or some call it God. Call it what you will the force that animates our biology is something that we go through most of our life seeing as something separate from us as people. Think about this for a minute, what animates us? Is it not our mind? The part that thinks, reasons, creates? I’m not talking about the organ of the brain that is our controller; I mean the part that you will not exist without, your mind. Some have told me that they think the soul is in our heart, but my meditative awakening tells me it in our mind. That is where we truly are. Yes, yes, it is all a package that needs to work together I agree but without your mind, what are you?

You can lose almost any body part and stay alive but without your mind, you have no quality of life. If you can see that you are truly part of Universal Consciousness and renew that connection to your true source you will see truth, you will know peace, you will be one with God, whatever you perceive that to be and you will be happy, blissful, joyful and you will truly know love.

If you were a rain drop how would you see yourself? Would you see yourself as alone or part of the storm? How do feel you would identify yourself? Now see this little drop that is you falling into a stream. How would you see yourself then? How would you be different than the stream? You wouldn’t, you would be part of the water in the stream. Then part of a river as your stream emptied into a larger body of water, soon you would become something even greater, you would be one with the ocean! Well, I’m telling you that you already are something greater than the sum of your parts… you are the I AM. You are part of the Universal Consciousness that animates and joins us all on the most intimate level of all. We are the Energy of Creation, we are its’ conduit, we are vessels. We are exponential so honor yourself, honor your family and friends, honor those you do not know or feel you don’t like, yes, even honor your enemies and learn true love and peace and then spread it around, Namaste and Bright Blessings, C. APPERECIATION AND ABUNDANCE

           APPERECIATION AND ABUNDANCE

I was told by a friend recently that she is having trouble manifesting what she wants. So, I asked her how she truly felt about what she was asking for. She confessed that she wasn’t sure she really deserved what she wanted and was worried about how she would afford it.

I told her that because the Universe reflects back to you at the level which you are able to accept, appreciate what you have and project abundance in your emotions, self-talk, your thoughts, and visualization. If you don’t feel you deserve whatever it is you want, those are the feelings that will vibrate out to the Universe. Those feelings of doubt are what will register and create more of what you say you don’t want. If you worry about lack, then that is what you will have. Remember that emotion is energy in motion and that is what drives all manifestation.

Your dreams and desires are there for the asking, but you must ask correctly. It is a lot like the whiney child bugging mom. They are more apt to get a timeout for being annoying than receiving the cookie they want. The Universe converses in a vibratory language. Whatever vibrational frequency you resonate on is the one the Universe will respond to. If you vibrate on a frequency of need, want or lack, that is what you will receive.

If on the other hand, you raise your vibrational level to the frequency of gratitude, abundance and acceptance, because like attracts like the Universe responds with gratitude, acceptance and abundance.

Practice being grateful and loving in all of your thoughts, words (both spoken aloud and those you use to talk to yourself) and emotions and see how things change for you. I caution you that this shift doesn’t happen quickly, it comes from your habitual thoughts and emotions. You can start today to change your habits so that they reflect your vibrational frequencies to a higher, more loving and grateful level so that you can manifest what you truly want.

Bright Blessings and Abundance to you all C. S. Roberts

COMPASSION

                              COMPASSION

Compassion is something that has been thought of as purely a human trait for many years. Recently humanity has finally become aware enough to see this virtue in animals. The dog that raises the motherless kittens, the dog that saves others; human and animal, the dolphin that pushes the infant that is floating beside the boat accident to safety and the list goes on. As the list grows, humans seem to get lower and lower on it.

With the death of America’s public enemy #1 and all the rejoicing that ensued I felt torn between compassion for America and compassion for the family of the dead man. Was I happy that he is dead? Not really, I  find that I am oddly taken by the entire event.

I saw this posted on FaceBook on May 2nd, 2011 and feel that it has much merit

"Compassion thought for the day: To have honor, means to act with honor and integrity at all times and to all people, even towards those who show none. So, though death brought death, and vengeance brought vengeance - I hope honor will bring honor and this cycle will end. For to act dishonorably, no matter the reason, is dishonorable nonetheless. To act honorably brings peace - even if at first only to one’s self. (Jennifer Fagala)

I was reminded how we felt on seeing the towers fall. How watching the rejoicing of that event made us, as a nation feel. I had to ask then and again now, where the honor in that jubilant reaction was. Thinking thusly, I wonder now how we can act with the same dishonor and call it OK. I know that the initial event was heinous and awful, but where does this type of behavior stop? If no one on this planet acts with honor and integrity, what we should expect but our own eventual extermination? We will just nasty away from our own lack of integrity, compassion and honor.

As like begets like shouldn’t we embrace compassion, honor, and virtue and integrity in order to create it? Spread it? Foster it so that it grows to engulf the planet so that healing for the common betterment begins. If not, then why are we here?

Fable of the Porcupines

                                                                  A prickle of porcupines

                        Fable of the Porcupines

It was the coldest winter ever and many animals were dying because of it. The porcupines, realizing that the situation had become dire, decided to group together to share their body heat. This way they covered and protected themselves and each other. A problem arose because the quills of each of the porcupines wounded their closest companions and even though they gave heat to each other the damage of the quills was making their decision problematic.

After a long discussion they decided that they needed to distance themselves one from the other to avoid hurting each other anymore that they had already. Because of the low temperature, the animals began to die, alone and frozen. The group then realized that another choice had to be made either they accept and adjust their quills while accepting and adjusting to the quills of their companions or disappear from the Earth.

Wisely, the porcupines decided to go back to being a unified group, working together to do what they could to help each other. With their new adjusted attitude and insight, they learned to hold their quills in such a way as not to create so much damage to their fellows and to live with the little wounds that were still caused by the close relationship with their companions. By accepting and adjusting to those around them, each one was able to benefit from the heat, companionship and strength that came from the others. In this new mindset they were able to survive.

The lesson here is that the best relationship is not the one that brings together perfect people in perfect situations, but the one in which each individual learns to live with the imperfections of, not only themselves, but those of others. In doing so can also admire and appreciate the other person's good qualities.

The unconditional love that we find in maturity, growth, acceptance and understanding will create a radiance that permeates everything that it touches. We also learn where to let go and where to hold on and all of this will generate healing, understanding, tolerance and love in everyone with whom it comes in contact. This spontaneous event is what raises vibrations, heals ALL things and allows us to become more consciously aware and closer to the whole balanced person that we desire to be.

Bright Blessings, Chessie
